Where I Don't go on the Web

I don't go to Twitter or Facebook or any of the other post about your day websites. No one cares about what a person's posts about part of the time, it gives people the chance to bully, and it tends to make people not any attention to their surroundings.
When a person posts they tend to post things that unless your a celebrity no one cares about. For instance, taking multiple selfies, taking pictures of what you are have for dinner, or what must be a favorite; complaining about other people like your boss, coworkers, family, etc. (Word of  caution to everyone who has complained about their job take them down because if you ever go for a new job they will probably find your account).

Second, it makes cyber bullying easier than ever. All a person has to do is take five minutes to make an account with a screen name that doesn't have their name and you can say whatever you want. The police can't do anything unless that person threatens your life

Lastly, it is just another thing to make people stayed glued to their phone. Lots of people whenever they get an email or someone their following posts something the phone dings. And the second it dings you have to answer no matter where you are and no matter what your doing. Talking to someone, working, or even driving. The phone has let to horrible and fatal accidents.

  1. Hey Kat,

I partially agree with your sentiment about social media websites -- I also do not use them. Social media can be a useful tool, but I found that it did more harm than good, personally. I also wish to avoid publishing anything online that could reflect negatively on me in the future.

I'd argue that the invention of smart phones has been a positive step in the evolution of humanity, but, unfortunately, there are negatives that come with it. Fatal accidents do occur because of distracted drivers, and preventing that depends entirely whether or not the driver chooses to use their phone while driving. Social media is not a factor in that equation, however. One can become equally as distracted by checking Facebook as they can by browsing their favorite forum.

  2. Hi Kat,
You state here that "no one cares about what a person posts about part of the time." I wonder--is this true? Are you sure? If that was the case, would social media giants like Facebook exist? I think the real problem is that people care *too much* about the minutiae of others' daily lives, like their selfies and the wonderful date they just went on or how much weight they lost last week. Social media is certainly an interesting medium to study one's narcissism. But it does go beyond bullying. For example, I have a family genealogy page that my cousin manages that I go go *all the time* and I'm constantly fascinated with what she has investigated/found.

But I agree--bullying does happen, and if that's a reason to stay away, then it's a good reason.
